The Berkeley, London

A culmination of elegance and expertise, McCue Crafted Fit’s latest project is an impressive reinvigoration of The Berkeley London. Speaking to Shop Spec editor, Can Faik, McCue explains how a special partnership with designer Robert Angell helped to restore the famous Blue Bar and The Collins Room at one of London’s most illustrious addresses...

Established Northern Ireland fit out company, McCue Crafted Fit has helped refit areas of London’s renowned The Berkeley, completing fit out of the hotel’s signature Opus Suite, Blue Bar, Collins Room and the lift lobby area.

Based in Knightsbridge, The Berkeley is the essence of contemporary chic and innovative luxury. With stunning rooms and suites, two Michelin-starred cuisine from Marcus Wareing, cocktails in the Blue Bar and The Berkeley Health Club & Spa complete with rooftop pool, The Berkeley Hotel exemplifies modern extravagance.

With over 60 years’ industry experience, McCue Crafted Fit specialises in high quality refurbishment and fitting out, in addition to offering bespoke joinery services to a wide range of customers in varying sectors.

The Collins Room at The Berkeley has reopened following a six-month restoration by Robert Angell, the design protégé of the late David Collins whom the restaurant is named after, in collaboration with McCue Crafted Fit.

It has been redesigned and extended with a dramatic new glass pavilion, which illuminates the space through intricate aluminium honeycomb detailing within the floor to ceiling glass panels. Dramatic carbon fibre beams extend from the restaurant entrance to support the glass canopy above, bringing a curved linearity and bright new dynamic to the space.

Les McCracken, Managing Director at McCue explained: “It was a pleasure to be involved with the refit of this iconic lounge in Knightsbridge. Working in collaboration with Robert (Angell), we were able to breathe new life into the space and evoke David Collins’ vision. Robert’s interior design has simply enhanced the overall experience, creating a serene space filled with natural light, illuminating the contemporary new look.”

McCue Crafted Fit also completed The Blue Bar, which has been restored and extended with a dramatic new glass pavilion, again brightening the space. The iconic wooden panelling of The Blue Bar, designed by British Architect Sir Edwin Lutyen’s, came from the original Berkeley hotel when it was based in Piccadilly. The dramatic central lighting structure has been retained, and a blue bar, topped with onyx, takes centre stage set on a floor of white marble and dark crocodile print navy leather, mirrored by blue leather touches on the bespoke furniture.

“Throughout The Berkeley Hotel, we were keen to place an emphasis on quality and the tactile nature of the materials used. From leather to wood and onyx, the bar indulges the senses, which goes hand in hand with the dining experience.”
