Hillier Garden Centre, Newbury

Neil Reik, managing director, Target Shopfitters, talks to Shop Spec editor, Can Faik, about the new Hillier Garden Centre in Newbury...

Target Shopfitters was established in 1984 and are based in Essex. Target work on a very diverse portfolio of projects across the UK. Over the years they have worked for B&Q, Calvin Klein, Jack Wills, Winkworth Estate Agents, Costco, Flight Centre and Hillier Garden Centres. They carried out the complete design and refit of all the corporate boxes at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in the past. Target work for a number of design agencies carrying out one off bespoke projects for them.

Target has seen a significant growth in the hospitality sector of their business. They have fitted out numerous restaurants from joinery supply to complete fit outs, these include the Jones Project London, Cinnamon Soho and Lobos Soho and recently the complete design and build for Hillier Garden Centres Newbury site. Target had recently carried out a very intensive fit out programme for Hilliers for eight of their garden centres. Based on the success of these we were invited to work on this flagship project for Hilliers. During this project, Target Shopfitters, Managing Director Neil Reik and his team worked closely with the Hillier Project Manager Charlotte Speculo to create the design to provide the look and feel Speculo was seeking. The project was completed on a very tight timescale and Target were responsible for delivering the entire internal fit out including the manufacture and installation of all the joinery.

Since opening, the restaurant has generated a marked increase in garden centre visitors. The design reflects the relaxed natural look and feel Speculo was seeking and which works in harmony with the rest of the garden centre. The design is expected to be rolled out across further sites and new restaurants for the group to continue their expansion and growth.

Target continue to seek projects within the hospitality sector and have show cased their services at the recent Hospitality Show at the NEC in January and the Retail Design Expo at Olympia in May.

Target have diversified by becoming the sole distributor into the retail and commercial sector for a new range of decorative wall panels. These products are designed to replicate natural materials allowing for easy installation with competitive prices. Speculo is planning to use these products in future Hillier projects and Target have already completed several projects with them. The products are marketed under the Targwall brand and full details can be seen on their website www.targwall.co.uk.

Target is proud to be accredited with ISO 14001 and 9001. It is an active member within the NAS (National Association of Shopfitters) and the FIS (Finishes and Interiors Sector)

Tell me about Target Shopfitters?
For the past 33 years Target Shopfitters have specialised in quality fit out and refurbishment projects. We have worked in retail, hospitality and commercial premises. Our offices and manufacturing facilities are based in Essex.

How is the current economic climate affecting the shopfitting market, and has the company felt the effects?
Since diversifying into the hospitality sector, we have seen the number of enquiries and tender grow tremendously. This is due to word of mouth from our current clients and the updated website which is generating a large number of enquiries. We are finding the market extremely buoyant at the moment.

What was the biggest hurdle you encountered while working on this project?
The project was carried out in the middle of a cold winter. The building was in effect a steel framed clad structure with a polycarbonate roof. Due to the extremely cold temperatures the drying times was the biggest obstacle we faced as this was causing potential delays. We had to hire in numerous heaters to keep the temperature of the building constant to allow for the applied finishes to dry and cure to allow us to keep on track.

With so many Shopfitting companies in the industry, how does Target stand out from the rest?
We pride ourselves on the fact we listen to our clients. We take their ideas and implement them into their projects. This ensures our clients are delivered what they want and expect. With our own joinery facilities, this enables us to ensure we deliver our projects on time and we can monitor the quality at all times. We also have a design side to the company so we are able to provide a full design service which includes 3D visuals.

Where do you see Shopfitting in the future?
The trends and fashion in retail and hospitality are constantly evolving. We have seen a huge sway towards natural and organic fit outs incorporating the latest technology. We are finding more that clients are requiring visual concepts and walk throughs so they can visualize exactly how their completed project will look. Based on this we are investing into the design side of our business to enable us to deliver this to our clients incorporating the latest trends and fashions.

What's next for Target Shopfitters?
We will continue to expand our design and build side of our company particularly in the retail and hospitality sector. We are looking to establish the Targwall products in the UK market and we will look to expand the range to broaden their appeal.
